Violet MacAvoy, Founder
A native of the bay area, Violet MacAvoy has been involved with music since she was 3 years old, when she first picked up the cello. She started french horn with David Otey 7 years ago, studied with Cathleen Torres for 3 years, and currently studies with Daniel Wood. This year she is a Junior at San Mateo High school. Violet has been a part of the highest level of the Peninsula Youth Orchestra since 2021 on cello. She is beginning her 3rd year of the San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra (SFSYO) and thoroughly enjoys being part of a strong brass section. She was principal horn in All State Symphonic Band 2023 and has participated in several summer music programs including Interlochen Horn Intensive 2025, Interlochen Arts Camp 2023, National Cello Institute, LA Suzuki Institute, LA Suzuki Chamber Music Camp 2022, and more. She has also played trumpet in the San Mateo High School Jazz band and Pep Band and chimes in on other instruments when needed. Outside of music, Violet enjoys competing and playing basketball. She enjoys surfing, and skateboarding with her dog, Larry. Some of her personal attributes include being conscientious, bold, adventurous, positive, and always gives it her all.
Violet was inspired to build Belles of Brass after a summer of volunteering at Cazadero Performing Arts Camp (CAZ). As not only a CIT, but a musical helper she advised many music campers about their journeys. She acquired 200+ hours helping middle school music students at CAZ. She also learned why its important for young girl musicians to have female role models in male-dominated brass fields; thus, she named her organization Belles of Brass to target this purpose. Through this unique experience, she discovered a necessity for an encouraging place for young brass players that fosters learning and connection for all.
